Sony vpl xw7000es1/8/2024 ![]() The projector also has a refresh rate of 120Hz, although thanks to the lack of HDMI 2.1 inputs this higher frame rate only applies to resolutions up to 2K (1920 x 1080). The Sony VPL-XW7000ES uses exactly the same 0.61-inch SXRD chipset as the XW5000ES, which delivers native 4K (3840 x 2160) images. Once again the buttons are laid out in a sensible fashion, the remote is comfortable to hold and use with one hand, and includes all the controls you’ll need to setup and operate the XW7000. The remote is the same large and backlit zapper included with the XW5000, but with a couple of extra controls related lens memory and 3D. The JVC projectors not only have HDMI 2.1 inputs, but also support both features. While the lack of HDMI 2.1 inputs may be understandable on the more affordable XW5000, it’s very disappointing on the higher end model, and their absence means the XW7000ES can’t handle 4K 120Hz or HDR10+. Unlike the cheaper model, there’s also a 3.5mm 3D Sync Out jack for connecting an external 3D emitter. The connections are located in a recess below the side controls, and just like the XW5000ES you’ll find two HDMI 2.0b inputs, an Ethernet port and RS-232C connector, a 12V trigger, an IR input jack, and a USB port for power. The lens controls are also motorised, making setup easier, and there are lens memories to create different settings for narrower aspect ratios – handy if you have a 2.35:1 screen. One area where the two differ is the lens assembly, with the XW7000 using an Advanced Crisp Focus (ACF) lens, which resolves more detail. The build quality is also similar, which is disappointing considering it’s more than twice the price of the XW5000. The XW7000ES is slightly larger at 460 x 210 x 517mm (WxHxD), and weighs more at 14kg, but offers the same choice of matte black or matte white. There are air intake grilles across the entire front, exhaust vents at the rear, and some basic controls on the left hand side as you face the lens. The Sony VPL-XW7000ES looks identical to the XW5000ES, with the same angled design, and centrally-mounted lens. ![]() If your budget is more constrained you could also take a look at the VPL-XW5000ES, although this model drops a number of key features, but how does the XW7000 compare to its cheaper sibling, not to mention its direct competitors the JVC DLA-NZ7 and DLA-NZ8? Design Since the XW7000ES is the high-end model, it also has a claimed brightness that reaches a retina-burning 3,200 lumens, plus motorised lens controls and memories, Sony’s Advanced Crisp Focus (ACF) lens, and support for 3D. The Sony VPL-XW7000ES is on of the latest additions to the company’s line-up of native 4K projectors, all of which now use a phosphor laser light source, the X1 Ultimate for Projector processor, Dynamic HDR Enhancements, and Motionflow frame interpolation technology. ![]()

Assuming you spend this average and save everything else, it would take you 12 years to accumulate 240 million thoughts ($2.4 million worth). Bureau of Labor Statistics data tells us that the average American spends about $56,000 per year. So, even if you did get a penny for literally every single one of your 25.5 million yearly thoughts, you wouldn’t even come close to the average top earner in our country.īut if you thought at a constant rate of 49 thoughts per minute 24 hours per day, you’d be able to join the 1 percent over time. On the economic spectrum, a $255,500 yearly salary would place you in the top 4 percent of all earners in the United States - but you’d still be a far cry from the 1 percent. Our 69,984 thoughts per day would grant us a healthy $699.84 per diem - or an annual take-home of $255,500. We’ll also assume your brain thinks at a constant rate of 49 thoughts per minute throughout the day and night. Obviously, the idiom requires one to share said thought aloud - but since we want to maximize our thought to money conversion, we’ll count all thoughts (internal or external) here. Now, let’s assume that every time you have a thought, you get a penny. Let’s call it an even 49 thoughts per minute. (Again, these studies are not peer-reviewed, and only serve as a rough estimate.) Researchers at the lab conducted some rudimentary experiments with student test subjects and electrophysiological monitoring, and found that the average person has about 48.6 thoughts per minute. Adjusted for inflation, it would amount to about 1.6 pounds, or $2.50 USD, today. When these texts were written, a penny was actually a considerable sum in England. If I got a penny for every thought I had, how rich would I be? But the idiom - a penny for your thoughts - lingered. We struck up a conversation, then, two stops later, went our separate ways. Last weekend, as I was pensively staring into nothingness on the DC metro, a stranger approached me and said, “A penny for your thoughts?” ![]() Rainbow heart overlay1/8/2024 ![]() ![]() Twitter’s capacity to add icons to hashtags has the potential to be more than a cute novelty. The image retains its impact independent of whatever toxic remark you want to make. Short of vandalizing the image itself, how do you subvert its power? It’s not impossible, for sure – few things are impossible if you’re sufficiently soulless – but it’s harder, maybe. But it’s less simple to deploy a profound image in a sarcastic way. Stepping sarcastically into an earnest, important hashtag like #LoveWins or #BlackLivesMatter is laughably simple if you’re the kind of person who doesn’t mind mocking or ignoring others’ pain or soul-searching. If you’re sufficiently soulless, many things are easy. But I suspect nothing written on these subjects in the last two years will prove to be as absolutely indelible as the photograph of Edward Crawford throwing tear gas back at the cops, or the one of Bree Newsome removing the Confederate flag. Several thousand more of those words came in the form of opinion pieces and essays, some of them by my colleagues here at the Guardian. Activists and advocates have generated billions of words about police violence, white supremacy, and ingrained systemic racism – 18m tweets mentioning Ferguson were sent in August of 2014 alone. “A picture is worth a thousand words” is the hoariest of clichés, but that’s partly because it’s true we’ve seen some especially striking examples in the last few years. Imagine telling the Westboro Baptist Church that they could protest funerals, but they had to do it wearing nothing but rainbow Speedos. Being required to flaunt the imagery of your enemy if you want to attack them might just make the attack lose its appeal. A rainbow heart emoji is technically just some pixels on a screen, but it’s also much more: an emblem a statement. As the recent belated furor over the Confederate battle flag makes clear, symbols have profound importance well beyond their apparent value. ![]() Were anti-gay bigots less likely to hijack the #LoveWins hashtag because it meant they’d have a rainbow heart in every tweet? It seems plausible. But while I saw right-wingers snipe about “that hashtag” this weekend, they seemed more likely to complain obliquely, rather than jumping in to poison a joyful conversation. Normally, any trending hashtag gets inundated with people intentionally trying to subvert its goals – sometimes benevolently or mischievously, sometimes for evil. But the rainbow stamp may have had an additional effect. ![]() Instal Compressor1/8/2024 ![]() But you also need to consider the operational inefficiencies and the subsequent costs of an older compressor. That’s why you should carefully consider any repair that costs over 50% of the cost of a comparable replacement. First, as compressors age, the costs of repairs increase. ![]() These costs come in many different forms. While the cost of repairs may be significantly less than the cost of replacing your system, ask yourself if you’re keeping a system working that’s actually costing you more in the long run by operating less efficiently. Therefore, if you are assessing the value of your compressed air system and making your decision in purely economic terms, you need to keep the total cost of ownership in the forefront of your mind. To put this in perspective, if you continuously run a 100-hp compressor at full power, you will spend $74,000 a year in energy costs, assuming a rate of 10 cents per kWh. Furthermore, 76% of the cost of owning a compressed air system comes in the form of electricity bills. Luckily, many people have crunched the numbers on this question and have provided a nice basic framework for deciding which approach makes the most sense for your business.Īccording to PneumaticTips, it’s important to remember that, if you consider the overall cost of ownership of a compressed air system, assuming a ten-year life for the system, the purchase cost only accounts for about 12% of the total. In other words, at which point does the money saved from a new system offset the cost of its purchase? In many ways, the question of whether to replace or repair a compressed air system can be expressed as a mathematical problem. The Economics of Owning a Compressed Air System View Our Products Learn More Find a Dealer Near You With that in mind, here’s our guide on when to either fix or replace an air compressor system. Because, in the end, we’re in the compressed air business because we want to see industry doing the best work possible. But we know that, with a little forethought and a good team of compressed air experts on your side, you can make the best decision for you and your business. With so many variables at play within these complex systems, assessing compressed air problems can be a confusing process. Because we are intimately familiar with both the repair and replacement of compressed air systems, we know that, depending on the situation, one or the other may be best for you and your company. Simultaneously, we have spent years earning a sterling reputation for expert compressed air maintenance. We are industry leaders in the sale of new compressed air systems. However, while many companies throughout countless industries are dependent on compressed air, the fear of replacement costs drive many companies to invest instead on repairs that may prove costlier in the long run. This power is essential for production plant operations who are looking to keep their employees productive while ensuring that they can complete operations safely and efficiently. In the event, Thunderball still ranks as one of the most commercially successful Bond films of the series, and Broccoli and Saltzman must have thought McClory was satisfied. Bond producers Albert ‘Cubby’ Broccoli and Harry Saltzman did not want McClory producing his own rival Bond series so they made him sole producer of the film adaptation of Thunderball released in 1965. McClory sued Fleming successfully, and many commentators (see Stevan Riley’s excellent documentary Everything or Nothing: The Untold Story of 007 for chapter and verse on this) claim the stress led to Fleming’s untimely demise at the age of 56. The mysterious organisation first appeared in the novel Thunderball, but Fleming had based the novel on a rejected screenplay he had co-written with the litigation-obsessed, wannabe celebrity McClory (there were other contributors but McClory is the key to this story). Spectre is the acronym of the Special Executive of Counter-Intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion, the wonderfully malevolent, much-parodied evil organisation with the enigmatic, cat-loving arch-villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld as its leader. Spectre is a strong and brave title choice that would have been unthinkable ten or twenty years ago, as it goes to the heart of the biggest controversy there has ever been about the literary and film character James Bond - Kevin McClory’s titanic struggle with Ian Fleming and EON Productions regarding the rights to Thunderball. As a title, it is a lot punchier than the other Fleming titles the Bond producers have yet to use such as ‘The Property of a Lady’ and ‘The Hildebrand Rarity’. Goldeneye was the name of Fleming’s house in Jamaica, and The World Is Not Enough is referenced in Fleming’s novel On Her Majesty’s Secret Service as the family motto of Sir Thomas Bond, a supposed ancestor of the fictional spy. ![]() My gut instinct that it would be ‘Risico’ was rooted in the fact that the producers have tried to honour Fleming through the film title choices in recent years even though they are running low on his original titles. I lost my bet, but I’m delighted that Bond 24 is titled Spectre as it is a fine tribute to Ian Fleming and the official EON film series. Second, by implementing a static analysis tool, Pitchfork, which detects violations of our extended constant-time property in real world cryptographic libraries.I had a rather drunken punt with a friend last night that the title of the next James Bond film would be ‘Risico’. We demonstrate the relevance of our semantics in two ways: First, by contrasting existing Spectre-like attacks with our definition of constant-time. Our semantics eschews formalization of microarchitectural features (that are instead assumed under adversary control), and yields a notion of constant-time that retains the elegance and tractability of the usual notion. We present an operational semantics and a formal definition of constant-time programs in this extended setting. This paper lays foundations for constant-time programming in the presence of speculative and out-of-order execution. ![]() Yet, the advent of micro-architectural attacks makes constant-time as it exists today far less useful. Constant-time is effective (it protects against many known attacks), rigorous (it can be formalized using program semantics), and amenable to automated verification. However, on long highway journeys manual transmissions require maintaining a very specific cruising speed to optimise economy, making automatics preferable. Some laboratory tests show automatics in a better light due to the tests using a prescribed shifting pattern for manuals not always optimized for economy. Real-world tests reported in 2022 found that in typical driving manual transmissions achieved 2 to 5% better fuel economy than automatics, increasing to 20% with an expert driver. Fuel economy of course worsens with lower efficiency. However, manual transmissions have the disadvantage of requiring the driver to operate the clutch and change the gear whenever required. Manual transmissions are more fuel efficient than all but the newest automatic transmissions due to their inherently low parasitic losses, typically of about 4%, in addition to being cheaper to make, lighter, better performing, and of simpler mechanical design. The efficiency, power output as a percentage of input, of conventional automatic transmissions ranges from 86 to 94%. The growing prevalence of automatic transmission is attributed to the increasing number of electric and hybrid cars, and the ease of integrating it with safety systems such as Autonomous Emergency Braking. Several manufacturers including Mercedes and Volvo no longer sell cars with manual transmission. In the United Kingdom, a majority of new cars have had automatic transmission since 2020. Historically, automatic transmissions were less efficient, but lower fuel prices in the US made this less of a problem than in Europe. By 2020 only 2.4% of new cars had manual transmission. Automatic transmission has been standard in large cars since at least 1974. In 1957 over 80% of new cars in the United States had automatic transmission. In Europe in 1997, only 10–12% of cars had automatic transmission. Automatic transmissions have long been prevalent in the United States, but only started to become common in Europe much later. ![]() Globally, 43% of new cars produced in 2015 were manual transmissions, falling to 37% by 2020. Vehicles with internal combustion engines, unlike electric vehicles, require the engine to operate in a narrow range of rates of rotation, requiring a gearbox, operated manually or automatically, to drive the wheels over a wide range of speeds. The first mass-produced automatic transmission is the General Motors Hydramatic four-speed hydraulic automatic, which was introduced in 1939. The 1904 Sturtevant "horseless carriage gearbox" is often considered to be the first true automatic transmission. Other types of automatic transmissions include continuously variable transmissions (CVT), automated manual transmissions (AMT), and dual-clutch transmissions (DCT).
